Casino Night at Work

Want a cure for the common office party? How about a casino night? With a little bit of planning, your boring office can transform into a Las Vegas casino filled with glitz and glamour, if only for the evening. Now, running a casino night does require more work than the standard party, but your friends and your coworkers will have an amazing time; it's well worth it.

It should be worth mentioning that it's not a good idea to actually have gambling. Aside from being illegal, losing a lot of money would probably cause some attendees to have a not so good time. If you're itching for some high-stakes action, don't worry. There are a few ways to make it exciting without anyone losing too much money. Before the party, pick up a bunch of prizes that people would enjoy winning. Depending on your party's budget, good prize ideas include gift certificates to local restaurants, electronic gadgets or something fun like a coupon for a casual-dress day. We'll get back to the prizes in a bit.

If you have the budget, you would do well to hire a local company that can provide equipment and staff for your party. Proper gaming tables and professional dealers go a long way adding to the fun and experience. Also, don't forget to have plenty of drinks on hand for your thirsty gamblers. It shouldn't be hard to find someone to play the role of a cocktail waitress for the night, just remember to tip well. It's also a good idea to have a karaoke machine set up, so would-be lounge singers can take a break from gambling long enough to set the mood. (Luck be a Lady, Anyone?)

Now onto the gambling! When your coworkers arrive, everyone should get the same amount of chips. These chips will be the currency used for all of the games. A little research is necessary to figure out the exact amount and denomination of chips to hand out. This is based on the selection of games and the length of the party. Also, you should have more chips ready for gamblers who lose everything. (Have them donate $10 to a local charity to be able to get back in the game.

After everyone has had their fill of gambling, now it's time for the prizes. Have everyone take the chips they won, and auction off each item starting with the least valuable and culminating in the most valuable, or "grand prize." With everyone in a gambling mood, an auction is great fun, and will make winning prizes even more exciting.

A well-run casino night will be one of the most fun office parties you will ever attend. With the right preparation, you and your coworkers will really feel like you've been transported to Las Vegas, without the nasty jet lag. Good luck and have fun!

Bingo: A Popular Activity for College Students

When you picture a game of bingo, the cliche image that might come to mind is probably a group of old ladies sitting around the retirement home. And while there are certainly plenty of older people that enjoy bingo as a past time, it is increasingly becoming popular with other age groups as well. College students are actually becoming big bingo players, and many college campuses are offering formal bingo nights through the school.

If you attend a game of bingo at a college, don't expect it to be quiet, slow, and easy going. College students can get very competitive, even when it comes to bingo. In many games of bingo, if you have two winners at the same time the prize is split. However, some colleges give away prizes that can't be split up like a monetary prize can, they instead make the rule that whoever is the loudest when shouting "Bingo!" is the winner. This means that you have to be on your toes, paying attention to the game, and ready to really let everyone know if you win.

Because many students pay an activity fee as part of their college tuition, that money goes into activities such as bingo and they don't have to pay to play. Usually all it takes is a college ID. Instead of giving money as a prize, colleges will give all sorts of different things. Often, it will be something from the school store or something with the college logo on it, such as a sweatshirt, blanket, or baseball cap. Other times they may choose to make gift baskets are prizes, including everything from popular DVDs to snacks and sodas to dorm furniture or room decorations.

Bingo at colleges is also incredibly fast paced. Most people there are either concentrating very heavily on the game, or else they don't care about it and usually miss numbers in favor of socializing. These young adults are ready to go, and they don't want to sit around and wait to have numbers called. You can usually play many rounds within an hour or two. To make things more exciting, most bingo events will have different games throughout the night. Some will be the regular bingo, where you need a straight line to win, but other types will be played too. They may do ones such as the letter X, the letter M, four corners, or even a full card.

Colleges that host a bingo night sometimes also have snacks and refreshments available. Sometimes they will provide this free of charge, by putting out chips, pretzels, soda, or even pizzas. Other times they will have a concession stand open where you can purchase something to eat for a small price. Another common option is to actually hold the bingo event in the school cafeteria or cafe. That way you can make food and drinks available to students, and they can then purchase them using their usual meal plans.

With the combination of prizes, food, fun, and competition, it's no wonder that so many college students love attending bingo night!
